初めましてハんですどうぞよろしく。

Hi everyone!
My name is Emily Han, and I have just started my freshmen year here at Notre Dame. I am from Niles, Michigan, which is about twenty minutes away from the South Bend area. I am excited to learn all about the Japanese language and culture through this class. My grandma grew up in Japan, making me a quarter Japanese. She has family over there and is also planning on taking my mom and I on a three generational trip to Japan next summer. Thus, I would love to be able to communicate on my trip and understand as much as I can about their language and culture. Hopefully, I will be able to switch this blog into Japanese as the semester goes on and see my progress throughout.

  1. ハンさん、こんにちは。So, you are going to Japan next summer for the first time? How exciting! I am sure you will be able to speak at some extent by then (how to shop, order at restaurants, etc. )

    1. Yes, it will be my first time! My grandmother goes every few years, but she only likes to travel in the spring while I am in school. But I finally convinced her to go in the summer!

  2. Your summer plans sound really fun! Being a quarter Japanese, what kind of culture have you been exposed to through your family, i.e. celebrate any traditional holidays, follow movies or dramas?

    1. My grandmother and mom cook Japanese food every now and then, but I really haven't been exposed to many traditions beyond the Japanese dolls and decorations that my grandma has given me.

  3. This is so nice Emily! I have been to Japan twice, but only in the winter time.
I have no doubt that it'll be a life changing experience, for knowing our origin is something that can really change the relation we have with our culture. PLEASE, make sure you enjoy the food! That's probably one of the best parts of Japan.
And if you spend some days in Tokyo, visit the はらじゅく (Harajuku), which is a Japanese pop culture "neighborhood" and ぎんざ (Ginza) street. It will see so many different people!

  4. Your upcoming trip sounds amazing! I'm sure that our class will be very helpful to you. Where in Japan will you be visiting? I had a friend who was able to visit Japan in high school, and she absolutely loved it. I've heard that the cuisine is excellent, and that Mount Fuji is also very impressive.
